Just like with any other type of Peroxide-based teeth whitening, there will be side effects. You should always tell your dentist about any side effects you experience after the treatment to avoid infections, for example.
What are the possible side effects?
There will be increased tooth sensitivity. It is also called as thermal sensitivity. Any person who had undergone teeth whitening treatment might experience increase sensitivity to hot and cold stimulus such as foods and beverages. Usually, this tooth sensitivity will disperse after some time when the treatment is done.
It is important to report your dentist about this to avoid problems to occur concerning your tooth sensitivity. Your dentist can assess you and give proper remedies. One possible solution is the application of fluoride to the involved part of the teeth. Fluoride can reduce the sensitivity of teeth.
You can also use toothpaste intended for sensitive teeth only. It can reduce the thermal sensitivity if used regularly. It is much better if you will completely switch to this kind of toothpaste even after you have recovered from teeth whitening side effects such that of thermal sensitivity.
This way, your teeth will be protected from any other dental treatments. For instance, you go for another teeth whitening treatment again, your teeth will not react too much for hot and cold sensitivities.
You may also feel pain discomfort. Hours after the treatment, you may feel pain and discomfort. This is probably because the nerve of the tooth has been inflamed. The pain and discomfort may differ from mild and rapid pain to moderate pain, or from slight to moderate pain.
Pain and discomfort might be the result of peroxide bleaching diffusion or the dehydration of tooth which actually happened when bleaching process is done. In some cases, pain and discomfort may also be experienced after the teeth whitening treatment because the tooth has been exposed to increased temperature for an extensive period of time.
All these side effects after teeth whitening treatment will eventually ceased after a few hours or days. These are self-limiting conditions. But, it is much better if you will report immediately to your dentist about all these things so that he will know if the symptoms you are experiencing remain to be in normal conditions.
You should not just ignore these side effects. Telling your dentist about this is very important because he can give recommendation for a possible solution regarding your problem. In most cases, a dentist will prescribe ibuprofen or aspirin medications to stop the feeling of pain and discomfort. These are over-the-counter medications so you can actually buy some of these from the nearest drugstore in your place.
